The Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department at the California Institute of Technology invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral research scholar position in Civil Engineering and Applied Science, extending over academic year 2017-18. One-year reappointment is possible and subject to performance. Postdoctoral research scholars are expected to concentrate on their own research and writing; to give public seminars/lectures on their research; to mentor graduate and undergraduate students; and to be active participants in the Institute’s scholarly community and events.
The primary criterion in awarding this fellowship is academic excellence. The Fellowship Committee seeks evidence that the candidate’s research, teaching, and publications will make a significant, original contribution in their field of study, such as fundamental research in computational mechanics, geomechanics, granular matter, material science and engineering, infrastructure systems resilience and sustainability. Eligibility is restricted to those who have received the Ph.D. between June 30, 2014, and June 30, 2017, and do not hold a tenure-track position. All fellows must have successfully defended and deposited their dissertations prior to the commencement of the appointment.
The salary for 2017-2018 is $60,000, and includes medical benefits. There is a $5,000 research allowance per annum. To apply, candidates should upload the following materials by May 1, 2017 (appointment expected by September 1, 2017):
