Faculty Position in Computing and Mathematical Sciences

The Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) Department at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for tenure-track faculty appointments. Exceptional applications at the tenured level may also be considered. The CMS Department is part of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS), comprising researchers working in and between the fields of aerospace, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, and medical engineering, as well as materials science and applied physics. The Institute as a whole represents the full range of research in biology, chemistry, engineering, geological and planetary sciences, physics, and the social sciences.

We welcome applicants with research and teaching interests in any area of computer science and/or applied mathematics, broadly defined, including research that connects to other fields at Caltech. Commitments to world-class research, to high-quality teaching and mentoring, and to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusivity are expected. Appointment as an assistant professor is contingent upon the completion of a Ph.D. degree in computer science, applied mathematics or related areas. An initial appointment at the assistant professor level is four years. Reappointment beyond the initial term is contingent upon successful review conducted prior to the commencement of the fourth year.

  • Interviews will take place in January and February 2022.
  • Applications will be reviewed beginning 25 October 2021, and all applications completed with all required materials uploaded before 1 December 2021 will receive full consideration.
  • Applications completed before 10 November will be considered for interviews in January.
  • Applications completed after 10 November will be considered for interviews in February.

Please hold all of the following dates for potential interviews: Monday and Tuesday, January 10th and 11th, 2022; and Monday and Tuesday, February 7th and 8th, 2022. Candidates invited to interviews for dates in January will be informed that they have been selected by December 15th; candidates invited for interviews for the second set of dates in February will be informed that they have been selected by January 15th.

Instructions for Applicants

  3. Upload the following documents (as individual files or in one combined pdf):
    • A cover letter.
    • A curriculum vitae.
    • A research statement (2-4 pages) that describes your research experiences, interests, and plans, providing concrete illustrations of your past contributions and future goals.
    • A teaching statement (1-2 pages) that discusses your teaching beliefs and practices, providing concrete past and/or anticipated examples of ways in which the beliefs and practices are enacted in the classroom.
    • A diversity, equity, and inclusion statement (1-2 pages) that discusses your past and/or anticipated contributions to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, service and/or outreach.
    • Up to 3 selected research papers.
    • Three reference letters. After you submit your application form, send the link that is provided to your three references and ask them to upload their letters of recommendation. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that reference letters arrive in a timely fashion.
  4. Once all required materials are uploaded, the application will be considered complete and ready for review. Applications missing any of the materials above will be considered incomplete, and review will not take place until all materials are received.
