The Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for the position of Lecturer in English to teach during Caltech’s 2024-2025 academic year. Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that attracts some of the world's brightest and most dedicated students. All Caltech undergraduate students must take discipline-based classes within the humanities as part of their core experience, and we seek instructors to teach in this capacity.

Caltech intends to hire one or more Lecturers in English. The fields of special interest are Medieval, Early Modern, British Modernism, and Asian American. The successful candidate may have further interest in Visual Culture, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and/or Environmental Humanities. The successful candidate will teach one to two courses per term and up to four courses across the three terms of the 2024-2025 academic year. Caltech seeks lecturers to teach first-year (introductory) and/or upper-level (intermediate/advanced) seminar-style humanities classes. Caltech Humanities classes are small, usually with up to 15-18 students per course.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD and have previous teaching experience at the college/university level. The initial lecturer appointment will run for a minimum of three, maximum of nine, months across the 2024-2025 academic year, corresponding to the term in which the selected candidate is selected to teach. The relevant dates for the three terms are listed here. There is a possibility of (non-tenure-track) renewal subject to successful job performance and ongoing need.

Hiring Salary: $12,000 per course
