Lecturer in Music

Applications Due:
March 1, 2024

Apply

The Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for a position as Lecturer in Music, beginning September 2024. Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that attracts some of the world's most bright and dedicated students. Many of these students are interested in music; they range in background and experience from beginning learners to highly trained performers or composers. To meet their needs, we seek someone who can offer classes covering a variety of topics in music history, music theory, and music appreciation.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced classes in both music history/appreciation and music theory. They will teach six seminar-style classes per year (two per term on quarter system) and can expect small class sizes (often under 15 students per class). The initial appointment will run nine months across Caltech's 2024-25 academic year (instruction begins on September 30, 2024, and instructors’ final grade reports are due on June 18, 2025), with the possibility of (non-tenure-track) renewal subject to successful job performance.

A Master’s degree in music is required; a PhD is preferred. Previous teaching experience at the college/university level is expected. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates interested in holding a teaching-focused position of this kind for a longer period. Applications are also particularly welcome from those eager to join and contribute to a diverse and richly interdisciplinary scholarly community.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, current CV, three letters of recommendation, teaching statement, and a diversity statement. Applicants may upload their application materials electronically at: [application website here], or mail their material to Chair, Music Search, HSS 101-40, Caltech, Pasadena CA 91125.
