The von Kármán Postdoctoral Instructorship is open to candidates showing exceptional promise in research and teaching, and we invite applications from researchers in all areas of applied and computational mathematics including (but not limited to) mathematics of data science, statistics, machine learning, numerical analysis, PDE analysis, optimization, probability, scientific computing, signal processing, and uncertainty quantification. We also invite applications from researchers who have demonstrated strong connections between computational mathematics and applications in science and engineering. The instructorship is offered as a two-year position with the possibility of a one-year extension. Candidates are expected to contribute to teaching in the department, including working with a diverse student body, while pursuing research. The teaching requirement typically consists of 2 one-quarter classes per year on mutually agreed topics to balance departmental needs and research interests of the candidate.

The teaching statement should also address teaching experience and training as a teacher as well as address the applicant’s thoughts on classroom instruction, mentorship of students, and ways to foster an inclusive, equitable environment for those who come to Caltech with many different backgrounds and experiences.
